History Himachal
People of the pre-historic period are known to have spread into the region
that forms part of the present day Himachal Pradesh. The region known
as 'Deva Bhoomi ' or the Land of the Gods in the ancient times find mention
in the ancient Hindu scriptures. The Rig Veda, the oldest of the Vedas,
mentions that the area used to be inhabited by Dasyus and Nishads. During
the historical periods the region came under the rule of different dynasties.
Evidence suggests that it was under the rule of Sankar Varma, the king
of Kashmir in the later half of the 9th century AD.
1009 AD this region was overrun by the marauding armies of Mahmud of
Ghazni who is reputed to have made 17 raids on India between 1001 and
1027. The territory came under the rule of the Rajputs in 1043 AD. The
beauty of the area captivated the Mughal rulers who are credited to have
constructed several works of art. Maharaja Ranjit Singh brought it under
his rule in 1804 AD.
With the ascendancy of the British power in India, the areas around Simla
were incorporated into the British Empire. The region became home to many
hill stations set up by the British to protect themselves from the extreme
heat and dust of the northern plains in the summer. Simla became the summer
capital of India and is home to some of the best Raj-era architecture
in India.
After Indian independence Himachal Pradesh was made a centrally administered
territory with the integration of 31 hill states. It obtained statehood
1971.
