A unique blend of nature's
splendour and human innovation, Periyar offers a rare sight to the travellers.
Periyar-the pride of Kerala, is situated on the banks of the Periyar lake
- an artificial lake, at Thekkady. it is one of India's biggest wildlife
sanctuaries.Its centrepiece, the man-made Periyar Lake at the height of
2000 Ft, covers26 sq.km. The Lake is an important source of water for
the many wild animals here. The forests around the lake were declared
as reserved forests in 1899. Based on recommendations of Mr.S.C.H. Robinson,
the forests around the lake were turned into a sanctuary in 1934. It was
declared a Tiger Reserve in1978 under the famous scheme Project Tiger.
In 1982 the core area of the reserve has been notified as National Park.
In addition to elephant rides, cruises on the lake and treks to the ruined
Mangala Devi temple - a beautiful old stone temple situated in the heart
of the Thekkady forest, this sanctuary offers the unique opportunity to
watch and photograph wild elephants at close quarters who come down to
the play in the lake. The ride takes you amongst the animals which can
be seen are elephants, tiger, leopard, wild boar, sambar, wild dog, langur
monkeys, etc

Kerala is an imperious habitat to the majestic beaches at the coast of
Arabian Sea. The spotless delight of the golden beaches, going for yachting,
diving in deep waters or riding the motorboats are superior experiences.
Kerela beaches are also eminent and are acclaimed for the yoga, meditation
and other health activities. the major beaches in the Kerala are Kovalam,
Thirumullavaram, Ernakulam beach. |
